태국 영화 `엉클 분미(Uncle Boonmee)가 제 63회 칸 국제영화제에서 황금종려상을 수상했다.

 태국 아핏차퐁 위라세타쿤(40) 감독이 연출한 ‘엉클 분미’는 5월 23일 오후 프랑스 칸 뤼미에르 대극장에서 열린 제63회 칸 영화제 폐막식에서 최고 영예에 올랐다.

신장에 이상이 생긴 중년의 남자 분미가 요양을 떠난 시골에서 사별한 전처 등의 유령들을 만나면서 병의 이유와 전생에 대해 생각한다는 코미디 영화다.

태국 영화가 칸영화제 황금종려상을 수상한 것은 역대 최초다. 위라세타쿤 감독은 2004년 ‘열대병’으로 심사위원상을 수상한 이래 6년만에 황금종려상을 획득했다.

The 2010 Cannes Film Festival ended Sunday with joy and relief as Apichatpong Weerasethakul's Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recalls His Past Lives (pictured) picked up the prestigious Palme d'Or. In a competition that was viewed as both disappointing and unpredictable, the Thai ghost film was a favorite among critics, especially over Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Biutiful, which some thought might take the top award.

Synopsis

Uncle Boonmee is suffering from kidney failure. As an avid practitioner of meditation, he is well aware of his body. He knows that he will die in 48 hours. He feels his illness must be related with his bad karma. He has killed too many communists, he says. Boonmee calls his distant relatives to take him back from hospital to die at home, a longan farm. There, they are greeted by the ghost of his deceased wife who has re-appeared to take care of him. His lost son also returns from the jungle in an ape-like form. The son has mated with a creature known as a 'monkey ghost' and has lived in the trees with her for the past 15 years. On the first night, Boonmee talks about his past lives that he remembers. On a second night, while the ghost wife is doing his kidney dialysis, Boonmee has a sudden urge to visit a place she has mentioned. So the group takes a journey into the jungle at night. It is full of animals and spirits. They finally reach a cave on top of the hill. Boonmee realizes that this is the cave in which he was born in the first life that he can remember. Then he passes away, taking with him tales that span hundreds of years.

Apichatpong Weerasethakul participated in the Festival de Cannes for the 5th time, Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul presents Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall his Past Lives (Long Boonmee Raluek Chat) in Competition. It is his third film presented in the Official Selection after Blissfully Yours in Un Certain regard in 2002 and Tropical Malady in 2004 - Prix du Jury. He was in the Atelier of the Cinéfondation in 2006 and a member of the Feature Film Jury in 2008.
